SnowPI investigates change across the full polar cryosphere, from the snow processes that drive it to the societies and ecosystems that feel its effects:

Our approach

SnowPI applies an integrated and interdisciplinary approach to analyse and project changes in the polar cryosphere:

Integration of natural and social sciences to link scientific knowledge with societal needs

Combination of observations, modelling, and data analysis across a range of time- and spatial scales

Use of emerging technologies, including deep learning, to improve the representation of key snow processes, which are insufficiently understood or missing in climate models

Engagement with stakeholders and communities to ensure that scientific results are relevant, usable and support climate adaptation strategies

A new approach to climate research

SnowPI adopts a dual approach that combines scientific advancement with societal application:

• One pathway focuses on improving scientific understanding through observations and model development
• The second pathway translates these advances into actionable climate information.

These pathways run in parallel and intersect to ensure that scientific advances are translated in a timely manner into policy-relevant information.
